Meet Lisa Satchfield

The American Heart Association and American Stroke Association's Start! Training program raises funds to curtail and prevent the effects of heart disease and stroke in the lives of people like Lisa Satchfield. Before her stroke, Lisa Satchfield, mother of 2, was a perfectionist who lived a fast-paced life and had a great job that she loved. On April 2nd, 2007 Lisa suffered a stroke that left her unable to walk or use her left arm. After two years of recovery, she has regained many of her abilities, but the stroke has permanently affected the left side of her body. A stroke is definitely a life changing experience.
In the months after her stroke and during her recovery, Lisa says that she felt like she had become a stronger person. She considered herself lucky and was grateful that she was able to have a second chance at life. As her thoughts continued to become clearer, she began to question her purpose and goals in life. A few days later, with impeccable timing, she received a mailer from the American Stroke Association (a part of the American Heart Association). The flyer had information about a marathon training program. Even though she says that her friends and family thought she was insane, she really felt like this was something that she could do. She told them that she wanted to walk and raise money for research in honor of other stroke survivors who couldn't.
In February 2008, Lisa trained with the American Heart Association and completed her first half-marathon, inspiring her teammates, friends and family. She continues to be a hero to others and recently completed the OC Half Marathon in May 2009 and the San Francisco Half in July 2009.
